When searching for a new dresser there are many aspects that people often forget about. Check out the tips below to make sure you know everything from dresser type to style so you don't forget a thing.
Dressers 101: The basics for your bedroom dresser search
Choosing a dresser that fits your needs—whether you’re looking for an urban piece for an apartment or a full set for a townhouse—is no easy feat. So to be sure you don’t forget anything while shopping online for a chest of drawers, here are a few search tips from our editors.
When it comes to dressers, there are thousands of styles to choose from, from those with traditional wood tones and elegant metal pulls to ones of the modern variety with clean lines and white lacquer exteriors. Luckily, Joss & Main carries them all. Here, some of our most popular styles.
Love the traditional look? Dark metal hardware, wood tones, and stylized molding are all hallmarks of traditional dressers.
Defined by clean lines and minimalist design, a modern dresser—especially one with a high-polish finish—can instantly give your bedroom a fresh look.
Mirrored dressers. Gold pulls. Flashy finishes. Dazzling details are the name of the game when it comes to glam dressers.
Dresser Shape & Size
When deciding on dresser dimensions, take into consideration two things: storage needs and space limitations. How many items are you hoping to store in each drawer? How much space can your dresser occupy? To ensure you find the right size, we’re breaking down the most important dimensions below.
Horizontal Styles: A classic style where the width is larger than the height, horizontal dressers are great for bedrooms with plenty of wall space. The number of drawers can vary, but typically, you’ll find most horizontal styles boast four to six. An added bonus? You’ll have plenty of surface space for knickknacks, organizational accents, and a matching dresser mirror.
Vertical Styles: For rooms with less floor space, look to a tall dresser; it’ll leave room for other necessary bedroom furniture, while still providing valuable drawer space. A tall dresser can have vertical drawers or side by side: the style is not restricted in terms of drawer type. Keep in mind, however, vertical dressers generally don’t have mirrors.
Number of Drawers: Before you think about how many drawers you need, take stock of your wardrobe. What needs to be stored? Jewelry and accessories will only require small drawers, while thick sweaters will store best in large deep drawers. Storing both? A dresser with a combination of drawer sizes will be best. From here, decide on how many sections you’ll be separating your wardrobe into; this will dictate the number of drawers you’ll need.
Height: Height might not seem like a big deal when thinking about a dresser initially. However, it can impact how you use it and how it feels in a room. A taller dresser is generally easier to access the top drawers because they are higher up on the physical piece of furniture. A taller dresser can help fill out empty space in a room because of its height. Similarly, a lower dresser can help open up a space and make it feel less crowded.

This double dresser offers a clean-lined silhouette that introduces modern farmhouse charm to your space. It's crafted with a solid and engineered wood frame, bringing a grounded look to your layout while helping you stay organized. Six spacious drawers keep your wardrobe, extra linens, and daily essentials neatly tucked away out of sight. The fluted detailing across the drawer faces showcases a unique textured look, while elegant metal ring pulls add a classic feel to the design. Plus, the extensive table top creates an ideal surface for displaying decorative lighting or framed photos.
It's a beautiful dresser. I must have looked through thousands. I love the off white color, which is incredibly hard to find. The drawers don't open completely, but they open enough. I will say this does not have the feel of expensive furniture - the piece is fairly light. It's ok as we're using it in a guest room. The drawers are also not perfectly aligned and since there are vertical ridges on the dresser it does appear a lot more obvious when something is off kilter. We got free white glove delivery, they called to let us know the driver would be there within the hour and then it took 6 more hours for them to show up. Cleared a path, but still managed to knock a painting off of the wall. Drawer knobs were installed, but are all loose and spinning so I'll need to tighten those myself, which is fine. Overall, I'm glad I got this (got on sale) and like the overall materials used for construction. It's a great transitional piece without being overly traditional or formal.. Jacqueline. Great dresser. The delivery was smooth, no issues there. There was some slight damage to one drawer (pictured). They offered to fix the issue however it seemed as if that would not be worth it and it would take quite some time. Regardless of that damage we really like this dresser. One issue is that the drawer-pull area sticks a little bit, but that could be a specific issue with this particular dresser. On the whole it is a very solid dresser, great color, great material. Would say that this is a fantastic piece of furniture however, not a good sign that the drawer front was able to be damaged in shipping. That means there might not be the most solid material there.. This dresser offers a harmonious blend of style and functionality, with its solid and engineered wood frame and cream and sugar oak finish. The natural wood grain variations add a rustic charm, while the curved corners and matte black handles provide a modern touch. Five drawers glide smoothly on ball-bearing tracks, offering ample storage for your wardrobe essentials. We love that the top drawer comes with a removable felt liner to cushion more delicate items.
The dresser came fully assembled and works very well! It looks great with my other furniture and I also bought the nightstand from the Essie collection as well. Love this dresser and will definitely be buying from Joss and Main in the future!. Jenna. Boston, MA. Thu Jul 09 2026

Embrace the drama of modern maximalism with the Marica collection. Curvaceous modern silhouettes are crafted from white teak solid wood and walnut wood veneer, rich in brown wood tones and bold grain patterns that demand to be part of something big. Layer on the patterns, textures and colors to create your own sanctuary of abundance.
Beautiful color in person. Much warmer than the online photos show. Good quality and sturdy.. Pamela. Washington, Dc. Sat Sep 19 2026
