How to Share a Home Office

(Without declaring relationship war.)

sharing a home office

It used to be that sharing a bathroom topped the list of cohabitating stressors—but with remote work on the rise, couples are facing a new, unexpected challenge: sharing a home office. So how do you create a workspace that works for you and your partner? Here, our team shares their strategies for this modern-day couple’s conundrum.

Tips for Sharing a Home Office

Give each other space.

No matter how tiny, it’s important to each have your own designated work zone. Do your best to divvy up territory and keep from encroaching on one another’s space. If you are tight on space, each of you can opt for a corner desk to make your own private nook in different areas of the room. If you don't have room for two separate desks, try testing one larger style and sitting across from one another rather than side by side.

Decide what’s communal vs. personal.

Talk about what can be shared (the printer, a stapler) and what’s off limits (your computer, calendar). Your shared items should be accessible to both—try storing them, especially your trashcan, in the center of your setup. It’s important to establish these boundaries at the beginning to avoid conflict in the heat of a business day. You can also use different filing cabinets to keep yourself organized separately.

Allow for privacy.

Often working on something confidential? Try using a two-sided bookcase or etagere to divide up your workspace—it’ll help to shield any sensitive information, while still allowing for easy communication. As for private phone calls, step outside. Your client will appreciate the professionalism, and your partner will be left uninterrupted.

Create a balanced space.

Odds are, your decorating tastes differ. Instead of igniting a family feud or simply giving in to one person’s style, opt for a crowd-pleasing neutral palette. With a unifying backdrop, you can each decorate your individual work zones, giving your space personality sans any style-competing chaos.
