No watering required.

decorating with fake plants

Faux plants are great because they're timeless, durable, and can fit in seamlessly with any room. We love decorating with fake plants because they energize our homes all year long and you never have to think about keeping the real thing alive and lush. And as a bonus, you never have to worry about over- or under-watering them or finding anyone to care for them while you're on vacation. Keep reading below for a few of our favorite fake plant decor ideas for adding easy updates to your home.

1. Mix It Up

Decorate with large and small faux plants in your living room to add visual interest. Large plants anchor a room, so placing one in a corner can create definition. If you have two large plants, place them on the sides of the largest piece of furniture to keep your greenery symmetrical. Small plants are easier to move around, giving you flexibility. Place one on a coffee table or the side table and rearrange depending on how much surface area you need on a given day. Always repot your faux plants in a real planter to give them a sensible and lifelike touch.

2. Create a Centerpiece

Decorating with fake plants is the perfect way to liven up a centerpiece. Choose simple greenery to use as your base year-round. As the seasons change, add in colorful faux florals to match the time of year. The creamsicle orange shown here is great for spring and summer. As fall approaches, add deep purple or red flowers to remove some of the orange's peppiness. Love garlands but not sure they’re appropriate outside of the holidays? Think again: There are plenty of leafy garlands on-site that don't have berries or pine cones in them. Run a simple one down the table and opt for serving food buffet-style on a counter or bar cart so that the garland gets the attention it deserves.

3. Add a Touch of Green

Decorate with a few sprigs of greenery to create a statement and freshen up any room. Place a few pieces in a vase and add water to give them a natural aesthetic. To disguise artificial plants further, place them somewhere where they'd grow if they were the real thing. Think: a sunny windowsill or a moist bathroom counter. Either repot with real dirt or add water and make sure to dust the leaves often.

4. Make Fake Flowers Look Lifelike

Decorating with fake plants and worried they won't look lifelike? Make them look like a real houseplant by bending the stems to create a bit of a natural droop. Pluck the leaves from the lower half of the stems the same way you would if they were a real bouquet. Place greens or florals in a vase filled with water, and you're good to go.

5. Use a Unique Vessel

While we love decorating with greenery, there's something special about using faux florals – whether dried or lifelike. Create an arrangement for a dining table or kitchen island. Instead of a typical vase or planter, you can prop them up in a woven basket. Florals also look great lying in a shallow wooden bowl. Choose a bowl that's long enough to cradle the flowers while still allowing the blooms space to peek out over the end.

6. Take It Outside

Elevate your outdoor space by decorating with fake plants. With faux plants, you won't have to worry about how much sunlight they're getting or moving them indoors on chilly nights. Repot large greens in ceramic or terracotta planters to add an artsy touch. Just add a couple of sinkably soft chairs to sit and bask in your faux plant's shade and enjoy an iced tea.

Pro Tip:

Fake plant decor ideas can invigorate the front of your home, too. Hang a faux wreath on the front door. We're loving magnolia leaves and silk eucalyptus right now.
