Your Guide to Custom Upholstery

From fabric to frame, we break down all the ways to make a piece yours and yours alone.

Fabrics in all the textures, colors, and patterns you can imagine. Frames to fit every style and space—big, small, modern, traditional. That’s the beauty of custom upholstery; the options are endless. But with so many choices at your fingertips, decisions can overwhelm. Here, we break down all our offerings so you can customize the just-right combination for your space.

1. The Cushions

When it comes to seating, comfort is key—and like style, it’s personal. Some prefer firm support, while others relish a sink-in feel. Not sure which is for you? Read up on our two high-quality cushion options below.

Down-Blend

Constructed out of ultra-cell foam, and then wrapped in down, our down-blend delivers the kind of support you won’t find anywhere else. What makes it so special? The mixture is made of 50 percent duck feathers and 50 percent fiber, and then swathed in high thread count fabric so feathers never poke through.

Foam

Made with high-density foam, our foam-core cushions are covered in fiber for a soft, super lush feel. The best part? No cushion fluffing—our foam compresses during use, and then returns right back to its natural state.

2. The Fabric

A seat's fabric is the most visible sign of quality and style—but there’s more to your chosen material than meets than eye. For example, durability. Do you need something spill-resistant? A fabric that never fades? Here, we break down all your options down.

Linen

A texture-rich, breathable fabric that keeps cool in the summer, but still feels cozy come wintertime. Choose linen for seating that’s elegant yet casual enough for everyday use—however, take note: Linen tends to wrinkle easily, so a steamer is a wise addition at checkout.

Cotton

Soft and cool-to-the-touch, cotton is an ideal option for breezy beachfront homes. But before you post-up with a cocktail, keep this in mind: While pliable and resistant to pilling, the easy-to-care-for fabric may absorb stains more easily than others.

Microfiber

A soft, plush, and incredibly durable option that’s resistant to stains and spills, microfiber is the perfect fabric for growing homes full of children and pets.

Polyester

A chic yet functional option that gives off the appearance of linen or cotton, but with an added bonus: it’s stain- and wrinkle-resistant.

Velvet

Looking for something luxe? You’ve come to the right place. Rich in texture and color (it does jewel-tones like no other), velvet’s dense fibers do have a down side—they’re tough to clean, especially if Fido's prone to shedding.

3. The Style

First, assess the style of your piece—is it traditional? More modern? Next, take stock of your room’s palette and decor aesthetic. Your chosen upholstery should suit both your seating’s silhouette (remember: large patterns can overwhelm small frames), and your room’s overall design scheme. Looking for longevity? Opt for a neutral hue that works with your home’s current, and potential future color palettes. Still unsure? Consider ordering fabric swatches. They’ll give you a better sense of how a color works within your home, and they’re helpful to have on hand when shopping for additional decor.

4. The Upkeep

Like all furniture, your custom seating will look its best when cleaned and cared for regularly. Here, a quick primer on keeping your furniture in tip-top shape.

Machine-Washable

While the majority of our pre-washed fabrics are machine washable—always read the care instructions included with your furniture. When washing, be sure everything’s zippered, and use a mild detergent in cold water before tumbling dry on the lowest heat. To keep covers from shrinking, put them back on cushions while still slightly damp.

Non-Machine Washable

For delicate fabrics, we recommend vacuuming or spot cleaning with a mild, water-free solvent or dry cleaning product to avoid leaving water stains.
