How to Host a Large Party in a Small Space

Five tips for maximizing space and minimizing stress.

Party tabletop, entertaining, party

Limited square footage at home shouldn’t dash your dreams of hosting a festive fete this season. With a few party tricks (courtesy of our editors, who love a good party challenge), it’s easy to transform your petite place into a grand, soiree-ready space.

1. Rearrange with abandon.

First, rid your entertaining space of any furniture you don’t need for the party. Next, invest in stackable chairs and nesting tables. They can quickly be brought out for extra seating, and just as swiftly moved aside to convert your space from dining room to dance floor.

2. Create a signature cocktail.

Instead of cluttering the table with a variety of bottles and drink fixings, concoct one signature drink that can be served in a few large pitchers. Try taking the same approach to food, too. A handful of delicious options, as opposed to a lot of little plates, will save surface space.

3. Make everything pull double duty.

Fill your kitchen sink with ice to turn it into a beverage cooler. Use your fireplace mantle as a drink or condiment station. Grab a bunch of throw pillows and turn a large window ledge into additional seating. It’s all about getting creative.

4. Remember less is more.

When it comes to decor think dramatic not big. Too many decorations can make a room feel small and cramped. So instead, opt for a few small yet bold floral arrangements and plenty of mood lighting.

5. Prepare for the aftermath.

To avoid clogging precious space with trash bags full of paper goods, use cloth napkins you can throw into the washing machine at the end of the night. Drink labels (or charms) also help to keep post-party waste to a minimum.
