Dip dyed furniture is one of our favorite decor trends of the moment. We love how a simple pop of color can transform an otherwise boring piece into the surprising style highlight of a room.
But, what we love even more than the finished product, is how easy (and inexpensive!) the look is to do at home. With a can of paint and about 10 minutes, you can makeover pretty much any leggy piece in your house.
Here’s how we applied the technique to create the stools we used in the shoot, above.
Step 1. Lay a drop cloth in a out-of-the-way spot.
Step 2. If the piece you’re working with has a finish on it, sand the area you will be painting. (Our stools were unfinished, so we skipped this step).
Step 3. Open and stir the can of paint. Dip legs in, one at a time, as far down as they will go. After removing each leg, hold it above the can, allowing excess paint to drip. When the paint is no longer running off of the leg in a stream, it’s OK to move on to the next one.
Step 4. Once all four legs are painted, set piece on drop cloth, and do not move until dry, at least 4-5 hours.
Step 5. When dry, use a razor to carefully remove any excess paint from the bottom of each leg.
