If there’s anyone that knows about quick home updates, it’s Emily Allison. It’s a constantly-evolving home that’s the premise of and inspiration for her popular blog, DecorChick.  “I’m always changing my home, probably always will,” says the mom of two and Texas native. “But if I wasn’t then life would be boring.”

We got Allison to share the techniques and tactics she most commonly uses when she feels the need to give her space an easy update. Here, how to redecorate your home in a weekend.

1_circleChange out textiles.
“Switching out the curtains, adding a new rug, or layering an area rug over existing carpet can give a room a whole new feel.”

2_circleAdd lighting.
“Lighting is also key to any space, so new lamps, special reading lamps, desk lamps etc can really make a room feel cozy.”

3_circlePaint the walls.
“Paint always gives a room a brand new feel, so I like to paint often. If I’m feeling bold I’ll paint an accent wall in a dark hue. I recently (like last weekend) painted the molding in our game room a dark grey and painted the walls white. I am loving the dark grey wainscoting/board and batten instead of the traditional white.”

4_circleChange wall art.
“Swap out wall art, even if you’re only switching pieces you already own from one room to another. Or try mirrors. I love adding mirrors. They can really bring more drama and glam to a room.”

5_circleTry a furniture makeover.
“Painting a piece of furniture will give it new life.”
